Service and Outreach Commission

This commission is charged with the congregation's
ministry outside the local church.

During the past year, the commission has continued
to support the re-settlement of a Sudanese family
through the Virginia Council of Churches and Church
World Service.  Having the opportunity to give a
family the chance to make a new start and helping out
those less fortunate blessed all who participated. The
commission also participated in The Field of Hope
Growing Project with the Grossnickle, Welty and
Harmony Churches of the Brethren. Members of the
congregations were asked to pledge a donation
equivalent to the seed and fertilizer necessary to
plant one acre of crop (corn, wheat or soybeans). The
Foods Resource Bank and the Global Foods Crisis
Fund of the Church of the Brethren's General Board
sponsor this program. The proceeds from the 2006
project were used to fund an irrigation project in the
Bamba region of Kenya. The 2007 proceeds will
support a project in Zambia. The commission
continues its partnership with REACH to help the
homeless of our community by being a host church
for the Cold Weather Shelter. The commission has
organized a team of eight (8) to travel to Chalmette,
LA to work, for one week, at repairing homes which
were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This
work is organized by Brethren Disaster Ministries,
New Windsor, MD.

In addition to the above, the Service & Outreach
Commission is responsible for:

• Relationship of the congregation to the Church of the
Brethren Denomination
• Relationship to the Mid-Atlantic District of which we
are one of sixty-four congregations
• Local ecumenical and civic affairs
• Good Samaritan Fund
• World Missions and Service
• Peace, temperance and race issues
• Brethren Volunteer Service

Looking forward to 2008, the commission continues to
struggle with the task of working in concert with the
other commissions to develop a balanced budget,
while insuring that there are sufficient resources to
fund those activities that are essential to the future
growth of our congregation. We continue to support
the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren Discernment
Plan and to work to provide new opportunities for the
members of our congregation to realize their full
potential as Christians. Our continued success
depends on financial support of our missions and
active participation in our service
