"Church in the Heart of the City with the City at Heart"
Continuing the work of Jesus. Peacefully. Simply. Together.

From Pastor Tim's Desk - May 2019

This is the Year of Reading the Bible. I’m not sure there is any way you could have missed that. On Sunday May 19, we will have finished our   congregation-wide Bible Read-Through. I could not be more proud of the way so many of you have poured yourself into this effort. I know there have been many Sunday School lessons that I have left beaming about my thoughtful and engaging Contemporary Christian Conversation Class which meets down in the Altruistic Room. I hope that   other Sunday School Classes have had similarly impactful discussions. It is in the Brethren DNA to read scripture together. From our collective reading, truth comes to light in new and revealing ways.

Now, I am not naive; this was a busy year for many of us. Some will not have finished the entire Bible by May 19 and that’s ok. But I do encourage you to continue your daily reading practice through the summer months and go back to catch up. We did not read the entirety of scripture this year so that we could wear it as a badge of honor. We adopted regular disciplines of reading scripture so that we could have a new appreciation for the spiritual discipline of daily reading. So, I would encourage all of us to keep the habit going. Choose a book of the Bible which piqued your interest and read it more slowly. Remember, we read at a rapid pace this year in order that you might see the full scope of the story from Creation to Israel to Exile to Jesus to the Church. But now, you might slow down and comb the scriptures for nuance at your own pace.

On Sunday, May 19, we will celebrate the completion of the Bible Read-Through. We will celebrate the gift of God’s comprehensive story. Pastor Audrey and I will preach from the conclusion of Revelation. This Sunday will be a unity worship in the sanctuary at 10:30am. It will also be Music Sunday. It’ll be a Sunday you won’t want to miss at HCoB.

We are immensely proud of you all and we rejoice in the power of scripture to spark a complex kind of love which we can share with one     another and the world. Thank you for participating in the Year of Reading the Bible!
