As you may have already heard, our fall Love Feast is undergoing some changes this year. Love Feast in the fall will continue to be on World Communion Sunday which this year is October 1st, but this year we are going to move Love Feast right after the 11:00am worship service. This will not be like typical potlucks after worship. The food will continue to be simple, because at Love Feast the food is not the focus, rather we focus on being filled and rejuvenated by worship and the presence of our brothers and sisters.
The set-up will also be different. This fall, men and women will wash feet all in the Fellowship Hall, but still separate in their own circles. For those who are concerned about this change, men and women will be separated by our meal tables so their will still be some privacy. This change will allow us to raise our voices together in song and to be together in the sacred space of feetwashing while still being comfortable with our fellow men and women.
The most important change in this Love Feast is that we are framing the worship for beginners. Whether you have been coming to Love Feast all your life or have been too afraid to try out this strange practice, this Love Feast is for you. It will be a time when we can either be reminded about why Love Feast is important and why we do what we do or feel comfortable entering in for the first time because each part of the Love Feast will be explained and walked through. Everyone will be able to experience Love Feast in a new way, focusing on why we do this and its importance for us as individuals and as a church.
For those of you that have been coming to Love Feast for years, this is the year of invitation — invite someone from the church who may be skeptical of Love Feast to come with you. Offer to walk them through the experience in a way that will make them feel more comfortable. If you have never been before, this is the year to try it out. If it is the feetwashing that concerns you, know that handwashing is also an option or you could just choose to observe to get a sense of what it is all about.
Love Feast is a beautiful service. In the regular practice of Love Feast we get the rare opportunity to both worship God and be in active service to our beloved community at the same time. The Love Feast is where we live out the Greatest Commandment — loving God with all our heart, soul and mind and loving our neighbor as ourself. And it is in loving one another that we have the opportunity to worship God and each person God has created. Join us for Love Feast this fall and be a part of building up the body of Christ in this place. You are invited!
