Feasting on the Word

Prayer and Fasting for our Sisters and Brothers in Nigeria

We’ve been praying for our Sisters and Brothers in Nigeria for weeks now. The terror and violence has only continued for many in that region. As many of you know, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, EYN, is a thriving denomination. These Brethren are deeply connected to us both historically and spiritually. Thus, the American Brethren grieve deeply with the news of their suffering.

While at Annual Conference, the Brethren delegate body voted on a resolution of support for our Nigerian Brethren. Our Denominational leaders asked the Nigerian Brethren leaders what we could do to help. At this point in time, they have called us Brethren in America to an intentional time of prayer and fasting. Our Nigerian Brothers and Sisters believe powerfully in prayer and so we urge this congregation to join its worldwide community of believers in a time of prayer and fasting for Nigeria. The opening of the resolution reads:

“Grieving with each new word from Nigeria, we as the Annual Conference of the Church of the Brethren resolve to walk with our Sisters and Brothers in Christ by entering a season of fasting and prayer. We commit ourselves to the practices of lament, prayer, fasting, and bearing witness.”

If you are able, you are invited to fast the week of August 17-23. We encourage you to consider giving up your lunches for the week. During the time in which you would normally  be eating, you are invited to instead feast on God’s Word in order to prepare you for a time of fervent prayer. If you are unable to give up food due to health reasons, consider fasting from another activity during the week that you do regularly, in order to spend the new-found time reading scripture and praying. We have included a schedule of scriptures to aid you in this time of feasting. At the end of this week of prayer, we will hold a special prayer service on Saturday August 22 at 2:00 PM in the Mullendore Room.
