Pastor's Blog - February 2012

Happy Groundhog’s Day! This folksy holiday on February 2 marks the mid-point of the Winter season. It’s hard to believe we’re half way through the toughest season of the year. But hang in there, Easter is on its way.

Pastor's Blog - January 2012

As we begin the New Year, let me share this prayer by John Birch of Kidwelly, Wales, United Kingdom. It speaks beautifully of the ways that God is at work in the seasons of our lives. May God bless you as we move through the winter of 2012. (ELP)

Pastor’s Blog - December 2011

Advent season is upon us. While the world thinks of this month as the end of the year, the church calendar places Advent at the very beginning. Advent is a month of preparation for the coming of Christ into the world, culminating with Christmas. It comes from the Latin word adventus that means “arrival.” (One of the few words I remember from my 9th grade Latin class.) We wait once again for the birth of the Messiah, the anointed one of God.

Pastor's Blog - November 2011

During November we will be focusing as we worship on stewardship. Webster’s Heritage College Dictionary defines steward as “one who manages another’s property, finances, or other affairs.” We are people entrusted with God’s property, finances, and other affairs. All we have comes from God and will one day return to God. We are the trusted managers of God’s household.

“Is the glass half-empty… or half-full?” This question is sometimes asked when someone wants to know if you are a pessimist or an optimist. This question also is a good one when considering the importance of gratitude in our Christian lives.

Pastor's Blog - September 2011

Paul Geres has written this prayer that speaks so well of our hidden expectations of the church.  It is taken from The Complete Book of Christian Payer (New York: Continuum Press, 2000). I hope you find it helpful in living your life in relationship to other Christians.

Lord, nothing has worked out the way I thought it would.

Pastor's Blog - August 2011

Coming home after a relaxing week at music and arts camp, we stopped at the Brethren Service at New Windsor. We thought we’d do a little shopping at the SERVV Store. (I like those drums and rhythm instruments.) Among all the beautiful handcrafts was a small book that caught my eye – Prayer without Borders: Celebrating Global Wisdom. I picked it up and leafed through it. There were stunning photos of people in Third World Countries. And beautiful prayers to pray for folks around the world.

Pastor's Blog - July 2011

Summer has finally arrived in Hagerstown! I realized it the other day. No, it wasn’t because school buses no longer pick up and deliver children. And it wasn’t because of the hot, humid weather. Summer was here because I went to a meeting of ministers the other day and nobody showed up. Well, almost nobody. There were two of us who showed up. I was there because I am the Vice President of the group. The other person was the President. He came prepared to serve lunch. With him were four gallons of iced tea and lemonade, and twelve large Papa Johns’ pizzas.

Pastor's Blog - June 2011

The important Christian holiday this month is Pentecost that is celebrated on June 12. Fifty days after Easter we mark the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of Christ’s Church. It is described in Acts 2. The image of fire is often associated with this day. “Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among [the disciples], and a tongue rested on each of them” (Acts 2:3). It reminds me of the story from the Desert Fathers.
