MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren is to celebrate the love of Jesus Christ and glorify the
Lord by striving to live as Christ lived,  experiencing the power of God's healing in our lives.  We seek to nurture
our faith community through prayer, music  and the proclaimed Word, while enthusiastically reaching out to
others with compassion, respect and love for everyone so that we may grow in faith and commitment together.

VISION STATEMENT
Journeying with Christ - Serving Our Neighbors - Uniting at the Master’s Table
2008 was a special year for the Church of the Brethren, marking the
300th anniversary of the beginning of the Brethren movement. In the
summer of 1708 eight Brethren were baptized in the Eder River in
Schwarzenau, Germany. The Church of the Brethren is one of a half
a dozen  denominations that traces its beginnings to this event.

As part of our local celebration, our own R. Clem, a local historian
and writer, agreed to publish a series of stories about Unsung
Brethren in our church newsletter.

On these pages, we would like to share those stories. Not only are
they rich in Brethren history, but also in the history of Washington
County, Maryland, and the impact of the Civil War on our community.
We hope you will enjoy them.
A Word About our 300th Anniversary logo...

Our Annual Conference chose a wonderful theme for
this year – “Surrendered to God, Transformed in
Christ, Empowered by the Spirit.”  It catches up both
the Trinitarian aspect of our faith and the way that
God moves among us through experiences of death
and resurrection.  The theme is based on Scripture
from John 12: 24-25a.  “Unless a grain of wheat is
buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never
any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it
sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In
the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it
is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in
your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal.”
